Delhi BJP Chief Quits After Losing Election

On 7 December, the Aam Aadmi Party, led by Arvind Kejriwal, defeated Narendra Modi’s federally ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the elections for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by securing 134 seats, thus ending the BJP's 15-year rule of the local body.

Taking responsibility for the defeat in the local body, Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Delhi chief Adesh Gupta tendered his resignation on Sunday. The resignation has been accepted by the party's top brass.

"The resignation of Adesh Gupta as Delhi BJP president has been accepted according to the instructions of BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nadda. The BJP's Delhi vice-president, Virendra Sachdeva, has been appointed acting state chief until further notice," Arun Singh, BJP's national general secretary, said in a statement.

The Aam Aadmi Party won its maiden victory in the Delhi civic body polls, securing 134 seats in the national capital's 250 wards. The civic body is said to have a budget of nearly $2Bln.
On Saturday, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal described the contest as “one of the most difficult".
The BJP deployed seven chief ministers, 17 union ministers, and BJP national president Nadda to lend heft to its election campaign. Air pollution in Delhi and rubbish landfill sites, among others things, were the main issues on which the parties campaigned.
