India carried out a successful night trial of the Agni-5 nuclear-capable ballistic missile from a defense facility off the Odisha coast on Thursday.
The weapon system carrying a dummy warhead tested for full operational range, a defense official added. The test validated the new technology, as well as the new equipment added to the nuclear-capable ballistic missile.
Defense scientists have added new technology and equipment to make the 17-meter long, 2-meter wide, three-stage, solid-fuelled missile lighter to enhance range.
The 5,000km ranged missile can carry a payload of 1.5 tons and weighs around 50 tons. Last year, China raised concerns regarding the Agni-5 missile citing UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution 1172. The resolution was issued after India's 1998 nuclear tests.
Developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization, the missile is capable of hitting targets in all Asian countries and parts of Africa and Europe.
