Gurugram police have rescued a teenage girl and arrested a local couple for brutally torturing her over the last few months.
The incident came to light on Tuesday after horrific pictures of the physical abuse of the victim were posted by an activist, sparking outrage on social media. The picture showed severe burns, cuts and evidence of injury on several parts of the victim's body.
Deepika Narayan Bharadwaj, an activist, journalist, and documentary filmmaker, took to Twitter to sound the alarm about the incident and seek help.
The post caught the attention of Gurugram police, who immediately took action against the couple accused, identified as Kamaljeet Kaur and her husband Manish Khattar.
Both the accused have been taken into police custody for two days, and Kamaljeet Kaur, who was working as a public relations officer, has been sacked from her organization.
While the victim is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, police suspect that she might have been sexually assaulted as well.
