India's Department of Atomic Energy has unveiled plans to build a nuclear power plant that will increase the country's energy capacity to meet requirements.
Minister of Science and Technology, and Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, made the announcement on Saturday evening, telling Indian media that the government has green-lit the installation of ten nuclear reactors.
The new nuclear plant will be set up through joint ventures with public sector undertakings (PSUs) for resources.
The construction of the plant is already underway, with a total of INR 20.5 billion ($2.48 billion) allocated for the project, of which INR 49.06 million ($592,000) has been already spent.
India's nuclear plants, which were previously restricted to southern states including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, will now expand to the northern states and this, Dr. Singh claimed, is one of the major achievements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.
