Haryana Woman Quarantines Herself With Son For Three Years Fearing COVID

A woman in India's Haryana state quarantined herself along with her 10-year-old son for three years as she feared contracting COVID-19.

Disturbing visuals of their living conditions at their house in Gurugram city's Chakkarpur area have left netizens shocked.

The woman's husband, Sujan Majhi, an engineer with a private company, filed a police complaint after which a team of law enforcement, health officials, and the Child Welfare Department visited their house and brought the woman and her son out of their self-confinement.

Identified as Munmun Majhi, the woman and her son were rushed to hospital, while officials from the Health Department sanitized their house.

Pictures are making the rounds on the Internet, showing a skinny and frail boy carried by health officials in a van and loads of trash and wrappers of chips, groceries, raw vegetables, dirt, and even hair scattered all around their home, causing a foul smell.

The police told Indian media that the woman had taken the step because of extreme panic due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and fear of losing her son.

During the last three years, the mother didn't even allow her son to step out of their house. He didn't even see the Sun during this period.

Majhi, who would communicate with them through video calls, would pay monthly house rent, electricity bills, his son's school fees, and groceries, and even leave bags of ration outside the main door.

They survived by eating whatever was available at their home and cooking food on an induction cooker.

The boy only studied with pencils and passed his time by making paintings on the walls of the house.

The mother cut her and her son's hair at home and threw it inside their house.

Meanwhile, the neighbors had no clue that both the mother and son had confined themselves in their house.
