The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) blamed Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the chaos in the local authority on Saturday.
BJP and AAP councilors clashed in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) last week after a contested vote to the MCD standing committee. During the brawl, punches were thrown and the session was adjourned until Monday.
The fight was sparked after newly-elected Mayor Shelly Oberoi declared one vote invalid, arguing that the process should begin afresh. Ballots and other key documents were reportedly torn up or lost in Friday's melee.
For her part, Oberoi claimed that she was “attacked” by some BJP members during the scenes, while the BJP hit out at the AAP, with Delhi BJP describing the scenes as "a big threat to democracy.”
“BJP will not let AAP do any such thing which is embarrassing for the democracy,” they added, clarifying that they are exploring "legal options" to contest the move.
The BJP in Delhi also shared a satirical poster on Twitter as a jibe at AAP politicians Durgesh Pathak, lawmaker Atishi and Mayor Shelly Oberoi.
“AAP Films Presents, Most Surprising Gimmick of 2023, Produced by Arvind Kejriwal – Khalnayika (Villain),” the poster read.
The caption given to the poster in Hindi said: “AAP's 'villain' who caused violence and showed dictatorship in the House.”
