Polling in Meghalaya and Nagaland started on Monday morning and is set to conclude at 4 p.m. (IST).
According to reports, as of 1 p.m. (IST), Meghalaya recorded a 44.70% voter turnout, while Nagaland had a 58.80% voter turnout.
In order to encourage a better turnout and voting in the early hours, the first five voters in Meghalaya were given mementos.
Meanwhile, the two northeastern states have 60 assembly seats each, but elections are being held for 59 seats.
Last week, the chief electoral officer of Meghalaya stated that the election in Sohiong constituency was being postponed following the demise of former state Home Minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate H.D.R. Lyngdoh.
In Nagaland, the elections are being held in 59 seats out 60 because the sitting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker from Akuluto constituency Kazhto Kinimi has been re-elected unopposed after his opponent N. Khekashe Sumi of the Congress party withdrew his nomination on the last day.
More than 2.16 million voters are set to decide the fate of 369 candidates in Meghalaya while over 1.3 million people in Nagaland will decide the political future of 183 candidates.
Meanwhile, in Nagaland, some incidents where people were pelted with stones and attempts to capture polling booths were reported in Bhandari, Mokochung, Aonglenden, Southern Angami-I and Alongtaki constituencies.
However, the state police said that the situation is under control now.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people in both the states to come out and vote in record numbers.
The results of the elections will be declared on March 2.
