A district administration in India's northeastern Meghalaya state has clamped a curfew in the village of Sahsniang until further orders after violence broke out on Thursday night following the announcement of the state election results.
"There is an apprehension that the violence may spread and intensify if left unattended," the West Jaintia Hills District Administration stated through a notification.
"Curfew may be declared in these areas to ensure that the violence is stopped immediately and the public peace is restored in the area," it added.
According to a local news channel, the violence started on Thursday afternoon after a TV channel aired the wrong election results about the Shella poll constituency.
"A crowd was seen pelting stones and destroying public property to prevent the district administration from using water cannon on them to disperse the crowd," Dr. Raghvendra Kumar MG, a senior police officer in East Khasi Hills, told reporters.
The district administration, meanwhile, has deployed additional forces to avoid any untoward incident. So far, nobody has been arrested and there was no immediate report of anybody being injured.
Meghalaya Election Results
The National People's Party (NPP), a regional party in the state, emerged as the single largest party following the announcement of poll results on Thursday. But it is five seats short of forming a government on its own, despite winning 26 seats out of 59.
The United Democratic Party (UDP), which was the NPP's ally, won 11 seats.
Their rivals -- Trinamool Congress and Congress -- won five seats each, while another party -- Voice of the People Party -- grabbed four seats in the state polls.
The People's Democratic Front (PDF), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Hills State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) won two seats each.
Two independent contestants also won this time.
The elections were held only for 59, seats since polling in the Sohiong poll constituency was adjourned due to the death of a candidate.
