Key Pakistan Gov't Ally Threatens to Withdraw Support Over Flood Promises

FM Bilawal Bhutto Zardari claimed that his party's support is conditional on promises to flood victims being upheld. In 2022, floods caused by heavy rains killed 1,739 people, disrupting air, road, and rail services. Tens of thousands of homes were destroyed, and more than half a million livestock were killed.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, a key ally in the Pakistan government, has warned that his party will resign its ministries and support from the coalition government if government promises made to flood victims are not fulfilled.
"The promises to flood victims are needed to be fulfilled otherwise, it will be difficult for us to hold our ministries," the PPP chief stated on Sunday after inaugurating the Seed Subsidy Program for flood-affected farmers in Karachi city.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) enjoys the support of eight other parties, but the PPP are a key partner with 13 cabinet ministries.
Zardari warned that the PPP-ruled Sindh province may raise the issue of unfulfilled promises to flood-stricken farmers in the election.
Last December, Sharif announced the construction of houses for flood victims during his visit to affected areas in Sindh's Khairpur district.
From June-October last year, unprecedented rains caused floods throughout Pakistan, with Sindh and Balochistan provinces suffering the brunt of it.
The floods are estimated to have caused damages worth $30 billion to Pakistan.
