Three men have been arrested in the Indian state of Bihar for allegedly lynching a man on the suspicion of carrying beef, police said on Friday. The deceased, identified as 56-year-old Naseem Qureshi, was a resident of Hasanpur Village in the Siwan District.
Superintendent of Police Gaurav Mangla told the media that the victims were attacked by a mob in Jogia Village on Tuesday. After intercepting the victims on suspicion of carrying beef, the mob started thrashing both men with wooden sticks. The nephew of the deceased, however, managed to escape, Mangla added.
He also told the media that the mob itself handed Qureshi over to the police who in turn rushed him to a nearby hospital. But he died during the treatment.
The arrested have been identified as Sushil Singh, Ravi Sah, and Ujwal Sharma and a search for two others is still on. The police took action after Qureshi’s nephew filed a complaint against five people.
The police are also investigating whether Qureshi and his nephew were actually carrying beef.
