India summoned the Canadian high commissioner over protests by Khalistan sympathizers at India's diplomatic mission and consulates in Canada this week.
"The Government of India sought an explanation on how such elements were allowed, in the presence of police, to breach the security of our diplomatic mission and consulate," Arindam Bagchi, Foreign Ministry spokesperson, shared in a statement on Twitter on Sunday.
"The government of Canada was reminded of its obligations under the Vienna Convention and asked to arrest and prosecute the individuals who have already been identified as being involved in such acts," the statement read.
During the past week, protests erupted in support of radical Sikh preacher and Khalistan supporter Amritpal Singh in the US, Britain, and Canada after the Indian government launched a crackdown on Singh. Authorities seek to detain the preacher, who has been declared a fugitive.
Supporters of the Khalistan movement advocate for a separate Sikh homeland to be carved out of the Indian state of Punjab. However, most Indian Sikhs reject such demand.
