Manipur State Chief N Biren Singh has said that around 40 militants were killed on Sunday throughout the state by security forces during retaliatory and defensive operations.
As per media reports, clashes broke out on Sunday between armed groups and security forces at over half a dozen places across Manipur during a disarming operation by security forces.
Media reports also claimed that at least five civilians lost their lives in these incidents, but no official confirmation has been given by the state police or government.
In a statement, the State Chief said that there were reports of armed militants firing at civilians with AK-47s, M-16s, and sniper rifles. “A few of them have been arrested as well,” he pointed out.
Singh further said 38 vulnerable areas had been pinpointed and that the state police have been conducting operations there.
Meanwhile, in wake of the action, the Manipur government has extended a statewide ban on Internet services for another five days till May 31 but shortened the curfew timing.
Federal Home Minister Amit Shah is also scheduled to visit the violence-stricken state for three days, beginning Monday.

Communal Violence in Manipur

Violent communal clashes erupted in Manipur in early May between the Meiteis and Kuki peoples, which left about 80 dead.
The Meiteis, who constitute about 55% of the total state population, are demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, a demand opposed by members of the Kuki tribe - who make up about 16% of the state population. The Kuki fear that if the state government agrees to the ST demand, it will be a loss for them.
Being granted ST status would entitle them to affirmative action for public sector jobs and educational institutions, in addition to giving them access to forest lands.
