India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a discussion with his Myanmar counterpart, Than Swe, on Sunday regarding the need to expedite projects, particularly the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway that has been facing delays due to several challenges in Myanmar.
According to reports, the highly anticipated 1,400-km highway project, seeking to connect the country with Southeast Asia by land, is 70 percent complete. This ambitious project is expected to bolster trade, business, healthcare, education, and tourism cooperation among the three countries involved.
Jaishankar took to Twitter and shared key points of his discussion with his Myanmar counterpart during the Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC) Mechanism event.
Noting that the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway was a "very difficult project", Jaishankar said that it is the government's priority to find ways to resume it.
He stressed the importance of accelerating projects and conveyed India's concerns about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. He also put forward people-centric initiatives to address the urgent challenges.
Jaishankar relayed India's concern about the recent disturbances in the border areas and reiterated India’s support for Myanmar in establishing peace and stability.
He also emphasised the importance of tackling human trafficking and the illicit drug trade, calling for stepped-up collaboration between the relevant parties to ensure the swift repatriation of trafficked individuals.
