World Water Week: Indian President Says Efficient Management Key to Water Security

India is the world's most populous country with about 17-18% of the total global population, but the country has only four percent of the world’s resources, making it one of the most water-stressed countries too.

India’s President Droupadi Murmu said that sustainable water resource development and efficient water management are the keys to water security and economic growth on Monday.
“Water is the fundamental need for life and water resources management has always been an important and challenging task for all generations,” the president said while addressing the Central Water Engineering Services officers in New Delhi.
She added that the contribution of Central Water Engineering Services officers towards the water infrastructure development by providing engineering solutions will make the country more resilient against natural and man-made water crises.

Speaking about the changing climate trend, the president said that climate has already affected the water sector, and the country has different topographical and climatic patterns in different regions.

The Modi government has rolled out many water conservation programs across the country. One of them, the Jal Jeevan Mission program, looks to provide tap water to 157 million households by 2024.
Another, the 'Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana' (PMKSY) (Prime Minister's Irrigation Programme), is being implemented with the vision of ensuring water for every farming field and improving water use efficiency based on the idea of “More Crop Per Drop.”
Meanwhile, the centre also has a 'Jan Shakti Abhiyan', a mission-mode water conservation campaign that has created a total of 1.05 million water conservation and rainwater harvesting structures.
