At least 28 people fell sick near Sarod village of Jambusar town in India's Gujarat state after a toxic gas leakage occurred at a chemical factory on Wednesday. The victims were rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention.
The incident occurred in the afternoon, when around 2,000 workers were present at the factory.
NR Dhandhal, the Bharuch resident additional collector, told Indian media that the affected people complained of breathing problems after they inhaled bromine gas that leaked due to a fire that broke out in a tank at PI Industries near Sarod village.
Sub-Inspector Vaishali Ahir from the Vedach Police Station told Indian media that the leakage had been controlled and that all were evacuated safely. Those who complained of health problems had been rushed to the hospital and were undergoing treatment.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the gas leakage and fire outbreak.
