The rescue team is planning to drill a hole into the debris and insert a 900 mm wide pipe, using it as a lifeline or an escape passage to bring out 40 workers who have been trapped inside the tunnel for more than 48 hours in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district.
According to officials, a platform is currently being prepared for the auger machine to perform horizontal drilling and effectively push the pipes through the debris to safely extract the workers.
Around 21 meters of slab blocking the tunnel has been removed and a 19 meters passage is yet to be cleared.
In the videos, massive stacks of concrete were seen obstructing the tunnel, with twisted metal bars from its collapsed roof buried in debris, posing additional challenges for the rescue workers.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) officers, on Monday, informed Indian media that all 40 workers are safe and were being contacted through walkie-talkies.
The rescue team has created an escape passage through which oxygen and food supplies are provided through a pipe.
The officers said that their team is facing some challenges in the rescue of the trapped workers due to the presence of wet debris.
