To transform plastic waste produced in the city efficiently and ecologically into motor fuel, the Ayodhya Municipal Corporation has signed an agreement with Bengaluru-based MK Aromatics Limited which runs India’s first plastic-to-fuel plant in Chennai.
The plant in Ayodhya will be the first and largest in northern India, with a capacity of 20 tonnes per day, equivalent to an annual capacity of 7,300 tonnes.
“The idea is to make Ayodhya a totally single-use plastic-free city,” Ayodhya municipal commissioner Vishal Singh told Indian news agency.
The spokesperson of Bengaluru-based MK Aromatics Limited said that with their patent technology, they specialize in converting post-consumer waste plastics into synthetic crude oil which serves as a value-added petroleum hydrocarbon derivatives.

With that, they manufacture various aromatic hydrocarbon solvents, aliphatic hydrocar-bon solvents, carbon, and its by-products for various industrial usages.
The centre will function as a compact refinery, initially transforming plastic waste into crude oil, and subsequently refining it into automotive-grade diesel which will be sold to industries and farmers at subsidized rates, catering to their needs for generators, tractors, pump sets, heavy machinery, and vehicles, the spokesperson said.
According to state government officials, once the project proves successful in Ayodhya, it will be extended to include all urban local bodies, blocks, and large panchayats (rural local bodies) in the division.
