Cyclone Michaung is expected to make landfall in Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh on 5 December, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
This powerful storm will bring sustained winds of 80-90 kph to 100 kph, the IMD predicted.
The Tamil Nadu State Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in 16 districts of the state on Sunday and Monday.
Meanwhile, Puducherry has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Karaikal and Yanam districts as a precautionary measure.
The Southern Railway has cancelled 118 trains in Tamil Nadu, including inter-state long distance trains, between 3 and 6 December.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the southwest Bay of Bengal and the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the Met office declared.
Cyclone Michaung (pronounced migjaum) is the sixth cyclone to form in the Indian Ocean in 2023. The name was suggested by Myanmar and means strength or resilience.
