The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has recently released a report on the Gyanvapi complex in Varanasi, revealing the discovery of ancient idols that substantiate the presence and worship of Hindu deities Lord Vishnu, Lord Hanuman, and others at this sacred site.
The partially damaged artifacts discovered by ASI indicate that the site, once believed to be exclusively a temple of Lord Shiva, was also the place where Lord Vishnu and Lord Hanuman were worshipped by the Hindu devotees.
The idol of Lord Hanuman is incomplete, consisting of only half of its original form.

An Early Medieval sculpture fragment depicting a half-human, half-snake figure was also unearthed which is believed to represent Lord Vishnu’s Varaha avatar. The discovery of Lord Vishnu idol during the excavation, showcased the deity's four hands, a wheel and a conch shell.
Another artifact depicted Lord Hanuman in his iconic posture, with one leg resting on a rock, showcasing his divine presence.
The discoveries also included a broken back-slab of a four-handed Vishnu seated in a traditional posture, holding a chakra and shankha and adorned with majestic regalia.
Another late medieval sculpture depicted the upper half of Hanuman, with one hand gripping a 'gada' (weapon).
These recent findings have ignited intense legal debates, as a Hindu sect has approached the Supreme Court with a petition, urging for an excavation process similar to the one conducted at Ram Temple in Ayodhya – the sacred birthplace of Lord Ram.
