The Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday that an area of 31.75 square kilometers had been liberated after Ukrainian troops were driven out of the town of Avdeyevka.
Ukraine lost more than 1,500 soldiers in the battle for Avdeyevka in a single day, the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry also said that the Russian Armed Forces are continuing an offensive to liberate all of the Donetsk People's Republic from Ukrainian troops.
The liberation of Avdeyevka made it possible to move the front line away from Donetsk and significantly secure it from the terrorist offensive of the Kiev regime.
Measures are currently being taken to finally clear Avdeyevka of militants and block Ukrainian units, the ministry stated. Few scattered formations of Ukrainian militants managed to leave Avdeyevka in a hurry, abandoning weapons and equipment.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the Russian military on its success in liberating Avdeyevka.
"Putin in the Kremlin listened to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu's report on the liberation of Avdeyevka. The president congratulated our military and fighters on such an important victory, on such a success," Peskov said.
