India's Apex Hospital, Defence Research to Develop Wearable Exoskeleton Robot

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) have joined forces to create a groundbreaking wearable robot exoskeleton.

A team of doctors and researchers are working on developing a special wearable exoskeleton robot designed to aid soldiers who have lost their ability to walk or have become paralyzed due to injuries suffered during their service.
The head of the Orthopaedic Department at AIIMS, Professor Ravi Mittal, told Indian media that the exoskeleton will be constructed from a combination of plastic and metal, creating a unique and innovative structure.
Prof. Bhavuk Garg from the Orthopaedics department at AIIMS said that they are currently in the first phase of creating a wearable exoskeleton robot in the gait lab.

"We are looking and collecting data about muscle activation patterns in people while walking. Once we have this data, we will feed it into a wearable robot exoskeleton, which will enable paralytic people to walk," Prof. Garg said.

Doctors and researchers are currently focused on capturing the movements of knees, legs, and other body parts through the use of multiple sensors and cameras on the body.
All the parameters and functions will be meticulously studied, analyzed, and worked upon, taking into account the person's walking style, leg rotation, speed, and stride length.
The doctors are working closely with IIT Delhi and being funded by DRDO to create exoskeleton which will allow patients to walk and move their hands and legs and also perform daily tasks easily.
