The Sri Lankan government has decided to contribute 1 million dollars to help children in the Gaza Strip.
The island's government has directed all ministries and government institutions to forego 'Iftar' celebrations during the upcoming Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and to contribute the savings to the specially created fund, an official release issued by President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office said on Tuesday.
The Sri Lankan Cabinet had already approved a proposal by the President to create a fund to help war-affected children in Gaza, the statement said, adding that the general public has also been encouraged to donate.
The aid is to be distributed through official United Nations agencies.
