In a unique and innovative way to encourage Indian citizens to exercise their right to vote, a group of scuba divers in Chennai plunged 60 feet deep into the Neelankarai Sea to launch an underwater voting awareness campaign that has caught the attention of the netizens.
In the video, six scuba divers can be seen diving into the sea placing a makeshift polling booth and mock ballot paper along with placards of Election Commission of India (ECI) which reads, "I know the power of my vote" and "My country, my vote".
SB Aravind Tharunsri, a Scuba dive instructor and director of Temple Adventure, who organised the deep diving voter awareness programme, told Sputnik India that the unique and creative approach to voting awareness has been one of the many other quirky ideas they have done in the past.
"We have done the world's first underwater wedding, and engagement, played cricket and chess to promote world tournaments and much more. All this has caught the attention of the netizens. This time, around elections, we thought why not spread awareness and encourage people to go and vote through this unique approach? After all, such an opportunity comes once every five months," Tharunsri told Sputnik India.
"Voting is our duty and fundamental right too. We created this awareness video to show how important voting is. We all must exercise this right without fail," one of the divers said in the video.
The upcoming general election in India will determine the representatives for all 543 Lok Sabha seats. This significant event will be conducted over seven phases, commencing on April 19th and concluding on June 1st.
Nearly 970 million eligible voters will have the privilege to exercise their democratic right to vote.
