India's Defence Secretary, Giridhar Armane, unveiled the indigenously designed and built midget submarine prototype ‘Arowana’ by the Indian shipyard Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited on its 250th Foundation Day celebration in Mumbai on Tuesday.

"...The submarine is being developed as a proof of concept. MDL is simultaneously working on development of Design of full scale indigenous conventional submarine by 2028," the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilder Ltd posted on X.

The launch of 'Arowana' showcases the country's growing prowess in the field of maritime defense technology.
Its sleek design and advanced features are expected to strengthen India's naval capabilities in both offensive and defensive operations.
The Defence Secretary also commissioned the Solar Electric Hybrid boat, which has a top speed of 11 knots, and was designed and co-developed with an indigenous technology partner.
The operating cost of this boat is nearly one-tenth that of a diesel boat and also comes with significantly lower maintenance expenses.

During his address, the Defence Secretary lauded MDL's contributions to India's economy and security with the latest warship technology. He also emphasised on becoming self-reliant and collaborating with the private sector to meet domestic and international naval needs.
