The US orchestrated the regime change in Bangladesh as it failed to gain sovereignty over the strategically important island of St. Martin, former Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina said in a message conveyed to The Economic Times through her close associates.
"I could have remained in power if I had surrendered the sovereignty of Saint Martin Island and allowed America to hold sway over the Bay of Bengal. I beseech to the people of my land, 'Please do not be manipulated by radicals,” the ET quoted Hasina's message on Sunday.
Hasina warned several month before the riots began that the United States was pressuring her team, as the US had plans to form an artificial Christian state and aimed to set up a military base in Bangladesh.
