"We have noticed that the Pakistani armed forces are moving their troops to forward positions, which indicates offensive intentions to further escalate the situation. The Indian armed forces remain on high alert. All hostile actions have been effectively countered and responded to accordingly," Singh said during a briefing of the Indian Foreign Ministry and the armed forces.
India's armed forces reaffirm their commitment to de-escalation, on condition that Pakistan's armed forces reciprocate, Singh also said.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated following the terrorist attack near the town of Pahalgam in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, which killed 26 people, including one Nepalese citizen. The terrorist-linked Resistance Front insurgent group claimed responsibility for the attack.
India blamed the attack on Pakistan and downgraded their diplomatic ties, suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and closing the only functioning land border crossing between the two countries.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the army operational freedom to decide on the manner, targets and timing of a response to the Pahalgam attack.
