The milestone was achieved during a spacewalk on Tuesday, when the cosmonauts retrieved a cassette from the Ekran-M experiment aboard the International Space Station.
The spacewalk began at 5:18 p.m. Moscow time on Tuesday, when the cosmonauts opened the hatch of the Poisk module. Among their tasks was replacing the cassettes in the Ekran-M experiment's semiconductor-growing equipment, which they installed during the previous spacewalk on October 16.
"For the first time in history, perfect crystal structures have been grown in outer space," the statement read.
The Ekran-M experiment is necessary for the creation of ultra-pure gallium arsenide films, a key material for solar cell production and microelectronics, Roscosmos noted.
