Russia's Su-57 Takes to the Skies for the First Time with New Next-Gen Engine

The Russian Su-57 fighter jet has completed its first flight equipped with the advanced fifth-generation Izdeliye 177 engine, said Russia's state corporation Rostec on Monday.

Specialists from the United Aircraft Corporation and the United Engine Corporation, both part of the state corporation, have begun flight tests of the new engine as part of the Su-57 fifth-generation aircraft programme, Rostec noted.
The flight was carried out by Honoured Test Pilot of Russia Roman Kondratyev and proceeded as planned, the statement said. Rostec added that the new engine, also known as Product 177, provides increased thrust and is expected to improve flight performance while allowing scope for further development of the aircraft.
The Su-57 is a multirole frontline combat aircraft designed to carry out a wide range of missions. It is capable of engaging air, ground and maritime targets and can operate around the clock, including in adverse weather conditions and in environments subject to electronic jamming. Its low-observability design is intended to allow it to strike targets even in the presence of modern air defence systems.
