“We have no reason to believe that the agreements reached at the highest level, and those reached between the governments of the two countries — Russia and India — are under any threat,” the minister said.
Russia will take “adequate countermeasures,” including military-technical steps, if Greenland is militarized in ways that threaten Russian security, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during a government session in the State Duma.
"Of course, in the event of the militarization of Greenland and the creation of military capabilities there aimed at Russia, we will take adequate countermeasures, including military-technical measures," Lavrov said at the government hour in the Russian State Duma.
Lavrov also noted that no one besides U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that India would stop purchasing Russian oil. “You mentioned that Donald Trump said India had agreed to stop buying Russian oil. I have not heard such a statement from anyone else, including Prime Minister [of India Narendra] Modi or other Indian representatives,” he added.
Lavrov linked the situation around Greenland to broader global instability, saying recent events show the world has entered a period of deep and long-lasting transformation.
"The dramatic events of the beginning of this year, including the armed invasion of Venezuela by the United States, the escalation of American pressure on Cuba, attempts to destabilize the situation in Iran, and the crisis over Greenland — all of which we have seen and heard about — have confirmed our assessment that the world has entered an era of rapid and very profound changes … This stage may last for many, many years, or even decades," Lavrov said, speaking at the government hour in the State Duma.
Arms control after New START
Lavrov also addressed strategic stability following the expiration of the New START nuclear arms control treaty, the last remaining agreement limiting US and Russian strategic nuclear arsenals. The treaty expired on February 5, 2026.
According to Lavrov, Russia is prepared to continue observing arms-limit commitments after the treaty’s expiration — but only if the United States does the same.
