Facing a shortage of warships and helicopters, the Indian Navy aims to turn self-reliant by 2047 by adding at least 70 ships and submarines over the next 15 years.
The Indian Navy will get “one of the most potent warships” on December 18 as INS Mormugao is set to join ten other destroyer warships that guard India’s waters.
The Mormugao, a P15B stealth-guided missile destroyer, measures 163 by 17 meters in length and breadth, respectively, with a displacement of 7,400 tonnes. It has enhanced stealth features resulting in a reduced Radar Cross Section (RCS).
"The ship’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities are provided by the indigenously developed rocket launchers, torpedo launchers and the ASW helicopters. The ship is equipped to fight under Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) warfare conditions," the Indian Defense Ministry stated on Friday.
The warship is equipped with several domestically made weapons and missiles such as surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, torpedo tubes and launchers, anti-submarine rocket launchers and a combat management system.

‘Made in India’

As per the ministry, 42 of the 44 ships and submarines under construction are being built in Indian shipyards, boosting the target of achieving a 100 percent self-reliant navy by 2047.
The government has also accorded approval for constructing 55 ships and submarines which will be constructed in Indian shipyards.
Facing stiff competition from China in the Indian Ocean, the country's navy plans to deploy more than 200 ships and submarines by 2037.
The Indian Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar said earlier this month that the military keeps a strong vigil over the movements of various Chinese military and research vessels in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

“Nearly 60-odd other extra-regional forces are always present in the Indian Ocean Region. We’re aware it’s a vital region where there’s a large amount of trade which transits, energy flows which happen. Our job is to see that India’s interests in the maritime domain are protected,” he emphasized.
