Russia's leading private airlines, Red Wings, will begin charter flights to Mattala International Airport in Sri Lanka from December 28, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow announced on Monday. This marks the third Russian airline to offer direct flights to Sri Lanka. Initially, Red Wings will operate charter services to Sri Lanka twice a week in partnership with Russian tour operators, with discussions ongoing for the possibility of regular commercial flights in the future. The announcement about the finalization of the additional flights between Sri Lanka and Russia was made following a meeting between Sri Lankan officials and the Red Wings team in Moscow. Russians accounted for 57,000 tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka during the first 10 months of 2022, equal to 10% of total arrivals to the country. According to provisional data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, the number of tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka for the first 20 days of December has surpassed 50,000, bringing the total number of tourist arrivals for the year so far to 678,392. This is positive news for the tourism industry in Sri Lanka, which has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and other economic challenges.
