The controversy was sparked ahead of the Global Investors Summit in Uttar Pradesh, scheduled to be held in Lucknow from February 10 to 12. The Uttar Pradesh state government is making all efforts to attract global as well as domestic investors to boost the economy of the state.
India's governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday came down heavily on the main opposition party Congress, one of whose politicians from Maharashtra state took a jibe at the Uttar Pradesh state chief over his "saffron outfit."
Senior Maharashtra Congress politician and former parliamentarian Hussain Dalwai derisively commented on Yogi Adityanath, saying: "...Don’t talk about religion every day, do not wear saffron clothes, and become a little modern. Embrace modern ideas."
Talking to reporters, the Congress politician said: "Maharashtra has provided good facilities for industry. So instead of taking industries from Maharashtra, he should develop new industries in the state. Create an environment to allow them to thrive", he added
In response, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla in a tweet said that "Hussain Dalwai of Congress attacks saffron & saffron clothes of Uttar Pradesh State Chief Yogi Adityanath."
He also sought to know from Congress whether it would take action on Dalwai.

His cabinet is leaving no stone unturned in its bid to make the Global Investors Summit a successful event. Eight delegations of ministers and senior officials have already visited 21 cities in 16 countries to invite investors, and have succeeded in getting a good amount of investment.
The Uttar Pradesh state chief started domestic roadshows in Mumbai, and will meet leading business tycoons and bankers over the summit. He will also meet prominent film personalities in the context of the upcoming Film City in Noida.
