Top diplomats from member states of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral and Technical Cooperation (BIMSTEC) grouping held their maiden “retreat” in Bangkok on Monday, according to an official statement.Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said that the participants concentrated on “strengthening resilience and coordination” among the participating nations in view of the “challenges we all confront today”.He underlined that “food, health and energy security are the common concerns” of all the BIMSTEC nations.Jaishankar also said that the top diplomats “explored new facets and activities to enter new areas of cooperation”.‘Sectors’ of Cooperation Under BIMSTECAt the group’s most recent summit last March, member nations identified seven priority areas for cooperation, namely trade and investment, environment and climate change, security (counter-terrorism, energy security), agriculture and food security, people-to-people ties, science and technology and connectivity.The summit held via videoconference took place in March 2022 was hosted by Sri Lanka.The leaders also adopted a BIMSTEC ‘Master Plan for Transport Connectivity’ at the summit, in order to boost investment in connectivity infrastructure in the region.BIMSTEC is a seven-nation group consisting of the countries of South Asia and Southeast Asia. It was founded in 1997 with the aim of boosting “economic and technical” cooperation in the Bay of Bengal region. The permanent secretariat of BIMSTEC is located in Dhaka.Currently, its members are Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

BIMSTEC Nations Talk Food & Energy ‘Concerns’ at Bangkok Retreat
14:36 17.07.2023 (Updated: 17:22 17.07.2023) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks “more active” regional cooperation due to the spillover effects of the Ukraine crisis, which has adversely affected food and energy security globally.
Top diplomats from member states of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral and Technical Cooperation (BIMSTEC) grouping held their maiden “retreat” in Bangkok on Monday, according to an official statement.
The retreat was organized to discuss ways to “further deepen the BIMSTEC agenda and strengthen the organisation,” the Indian foreign ministry said in a statement.

S. Jaishankar said that the participants concentrated on “strengthening resilience and coordination” among the participating nations in view of the “challenges we all confront today”.
He underlined that
“food, health and energy security are the common concerns” of all the BIMSTEC nations.
“Technology solutions can be subject for both collaboration and exchange of best practices. Our common objective is to enhance growth and promote prosperity,” the Indian FM stated.
Jaishankar also said that the top diplomats “explored new facets and activities to enter new areas of cooperation”.
