Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu led the nation on Wednesday in paying respect to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his fifth death anniversary. Others who paid their respect to the late Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader included Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Federal ministers and several members of other political parties also paid rich tributes on Wednesday.Early in the morning, Modi, along with Murmu, Dhankhar, federal ministers, and other Bharatiya Janata Party members reached the "Sadaiv Atal" memorial (the memorial of Vajpayee) in Delhi, and paid floral tributes.BJP President J.P. Nadda, in a tweet in Hindi, said: “On his death anniversary, I bow down to 'Bharat Ratna' revered Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji, a source of inspiration for Bharatiya Janata Party workers, a pioneer of service and good governance. He ushered in a new political era in India. His dedication towards poor welfare will always pave our way.”Meanwhile, talking to the media on Vajpayee’s death anniversary, federal minister Shobha Karandlaje said: “We have reached here due to him. He inspired the entire country. How to run the government and bring everyone together - he taught us that...We are walking on his path. It is sad that he is not with us anymore but his inspiration and blessings are with us.”What Is Atal Bihari Vajpayee Remembered For?Born in Gwalior in 1924, Vajpayee was the first non-Congress prime minister to serve a full term in office. He served for two terms from 16 May 1996 to 1 June 1996, and from 19 March 1998 to 22 May 2004.He also held the portfolio of external affairs minister in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Moraji Desai from 1977 to 1979.In 2018, Vajpayee passed away at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi on August 16 at the age of 93.After his demise, the Modi government declared that his birthday (25 December) would be celebrated as Good Governance Day every year.He was also conferred with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 2015, and the Padma Vibhushan, the second civilian award, in 1992.He was credited with popularising the BJP beyond its base and running a coalition government successfully for six years, pushing reforms, and boosting infrastructure.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee died on 16 August 2018 at a Delhi hospital following a kidney tract infection, and chest congestion. He was admitted there on 11 June 2018.
