Indian Muslims – scholars, politicians, and groups – have expressed their support for the Palestinian people after Israel declared war in response to an attack by Hamas on 7 October.
Indian Muslim organisation Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind on Saturday carried out a march in Kolkata city in West Bengal to support Palestine amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas.
Dozens of protesters were seen raising "Free Palestine" slogans and holding placards. They also asked for an end to Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian land.
On Friday, a local group called the Minority Youth Federation organised the
protest march supporting Palestine. Both protests reportedly ended peacefully.
Earlier this week, many Muslim lawmakers expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people and called for an "immediate
cessation of war declared by Israel".
A top Indian Muslim scholars' group, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, expressed deep concern over the violence in Gaza and southern Israel.
Hamas, an armed Palestine militant group, on 7 October launched its largest-ever surprise assault on Israel, killing at least 1,300 Israelis and foreign nationals. In retaliation, Israel has since been heavily bombarding the Gaza, killing at least 1,900 Palestinians.
Meanwhile, Israel on Friday ordered 1.1 million Palestinians – almost half the population of the Gaza Strip – to
evacuate northern Gaza and move southwards
within 24 hours "for their own safety and protection".
The United Nations has called the order impossible and urged for a way to assist the many besieged Palestinians who are now left without power, water, or Internet.
