Sri Lanka Makes Efforts To Prevent People Joining Ukraine Forces: Minister
Sri Lanka insists that it has made all possible efforts to stop its citizens from joining Ukraine forces, amid reports that three of its former security personnel have been killed in the Ukraine conflict.
Sri Lanka is taking measures to prevent the recruitment of mercenaries for the Ukrainian Armed Forces through local agents, foreign minister Ali Sabry said on Saturday.
The foreign minister's remark came amid reports that three Sri Lankan ex-military personnel had been killed in the
Ukraine conflict.
Sabry said the country's security authorities had been informed of a local agent recruiting mercenaries to fight on behalf of Ukraine, and the situation was dealt with.
However, the minister said the government could not exercise any control over any national who left the country to enter Ukraine for fighting.
Three former members of the
Sri Lankan military were killed on Monday in the conflict, including Captain Ranish Hewage, the commander of the First Special Forces of the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine — the so-called Ukrainian Foreign Legion.
