Indian Govt Sends Notice to Amazon for 'Deceptive Trade Practices'
A regulatory body had issued a notice to the Washington-based e-commerce giant following a complaint by an industry body regarding the sale of sweets on its platform as 'prasad' (offering) of Ram temple.
The Indian government has sent a notice to US-based e-commerce company Amazon for selling sweets in the name of Ram's temple 'prasad' (blessed food) on its platform.
The action by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) came after the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) filed a complaint alleging that Amazon was "misleading consumers by consumers by selling sweets in the name of Ram temple prasad".
In its notice, the regulator accused the e-commerce giant of engaging in "deceptive trade practices" by selling sweets under the name "Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad".
“Enabling the sale of food products online that make false representations misleads consumers regarding the genuine characteristics of the product. Such practice falsely influences consumers to make purchase decisions they might not have otherwise taken, had the accurate attributes of the product been mentioned,” the CCPA declared.
According to media reports, the specific products on Amazon's platform include "Sri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad - Raghupati Ghee Ladoo,
Ayodhya Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad, Khoya Khobi Ladoo, Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad - Desi Cow Milk Peda," among others.
The CCPA has given Amazon seven days to respond to the notice and if the e-commerce giant fails to respond, necessary action will be initiated under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
After the notice was issued, the e-commerce company removed the sale option from its platform and said in a statement that appropriate action will be initiated as per its policies.
“We have received communication from the CCPA regarding misleading product claims by certain seller(s) and investigating them for violations. In the interim, we are taking appropriate action against such listings as per our policies," Amazon spokesperson shared.
