A fleet of Russian Pacific Fleet ships made a business call at the port of Chittagong in the People's Republic of Bangladesh, during which the sailors honoured the memory of Soviet servicemen who had cleared mines in the port, reported the Pacific Fleet.

"The crews of the Pacific Fleet (PF) ships, as part of their business visit to the People's Republic of Bangladesh, took part in commemorative events dedicated to the assistance provided by Soviet military sailors in clearing the mined and blocked port of Chittagong between 1972 and 1974 during the early years of the young republic," the statement said.It was noted that, as part of the events, sailors from both countries laid wreaths and flowers at the memorial and the grave of Senior Sailor Yuri Redkin, who died on 13 July 1973 during the work to clear and de-mine the waters of the port.The Pacific Fleet ship detachment, consisting of the corvettes "Rezkiy", "Hero of the Russian Federation Aldar Tsydenzhapov", and the medium sea tanker "Pechenga", made the business call to Chittagong port the day before, the press service clarified. When the Russian Navy ships entered the port, the crews of all the ships of the Bangladesh Navy were lined up, greeting the Russian sailors, as reported by the Pacific Fleet.Earlier, the Pacific Fleet ship detachment participated in the multilateral exercise "Komodo-2025" in Indonesia, the trilateral naval exercise "Maritime Security Belt - 2025" organised by Iran, the "Arabian Monsoon" exercise with Pakistani ships, and the traditional naval exercise "Indra Navy-2025" with ships of the Indian Navy.Work to return the port to peaceful use began on 2 April 1972, following a request for assistance from the Bangladeshi authorities to the Soviet Union. Over the course of 26 months, Soviet sailors cleared 1,002 square miles of the port's waters, restored 12 piers, and raised 26 vessels with a total displacement of 100,000 tons. The international assistance provided by Soviet sailors to the friendly nation was given free of charge.
