Rossiya Segodnya International Media Group held an expert debate titled SCO’s Role in the New Geopolitical Reality.
The panel highlighted the need for the SCO to act as a stabilising force amid growing global tensions, economic disruptions, and rising great power rivalries.
A panel of distinguished experts explored how the SCO can provide a stabilising force amid the rising challenges of great power rivalry, economic disruptions, and political instability.
Opening the discussion, Alexander Lukin, Council Chair at the Russian National SCO Research Centre, highlighted the SCO's role as a key regional organisation and stressed its need to act as a unifying force amid global tensions, particularly the United States trade wars.
“In today’s world, when the United States is unleashing trade wars, focusing on economic issues is more critical than ever,” he stated.
The US, in its quest to maintain global hegemony, has caused economic deceleration and new challenges in areas such as energy, food, and environmental security, Li Ziguo, Director at the Department for European-Central Asian Studies at the China Institute of International Studies, pointed out.

"There is a lot of disruption in today’s world because the US does not want to lose its dominance,” Li noted, reflecting the broader discontent with the US approach.

Rajendra Singh Yadav, Director of the Centre for Strategic Studies & Simulation at the United Service Institution of India, called for regional cooperation to counter unilateral geopolitical dominance.

"The world needs a cooperative approach, and the SCO must play a key role in countering one-sided power plays,” Yadav stressed, underscoring the importance of building stronger foundations within the SCO and BRICS to ensure global stability.

Further, Athar Zafar, Senior Research Fellow at the Indian Council of World Affairs, stressed that the SCO’s consensus-driven approach is key to addressing global challenges like terrorism and climate change.
Zhumabek Sarabekov, Acting Director of Kazakhstan's Institute of World Economy and Politics, warned that tariff wars since April 2025 have fragmented global markets and boosted protectionism. Igor Shestakov, Director of the Oy Ordo Centre in Russia, highlighted Russia’s 30% trade growth with SCO members despite Western sanctions, urging a multipolar economic agenda.
ahangir Karami, Member of the Scientific Board at the Institute for Iran-Eurasia Studies (IRAS) and Professor at the University of Tehran, argued for deepening dialogue within the SCO as a means to support the emerging multipolar world order.

Values such as democracy and civil society were essential for social development, but only through responsible governments willing to cooperate multilaterally, he concluded.
