Foreign Business Activity in Russia Surpasses Pre-Sanctions Level
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Foreign business activity in Russia is now higher than before the sanctions, with companies from China, Belarus and the United Arab Emirates being the most active, according to a study by Russia's VTB bank and Online Patent firm released on Tuesday.
"In 2024, the number of applications for registration of foreign trademarks exceeded the pre-sanction level by 18%. Companies from China and Belarus are especially active on the Russian market, as well as new players who did not register trademarks until 2022, for example, from the UAE," the study said.
Every 10th foreign-filed trademark registration application over the past five years relates to the electronics sector, another 8% falls on wholesale and retail trade and about 7% on cosmetics. Chinese companies have become particularly active since 2022, with their trademark applications doubling in 2022-2024 compared to 2020-2022. Electronics brands were the leaders with 16%, followed by clothing (8%) and machinery, machine tools and engines (8%).
Belarusian companies have also expanded their presence by filing twice as many trademark applications. The largest number of applications were filed in the wholesale and retail trade (12%), followed by confectionery and groceries (8%) and cosmetics and dairy products (7% each).
Non-residents have filed about 50,000 applications for the trademark registration to the Federal Service for Intellectual Property, or Rospatent, over the past five years, the study said.
