Lavrov Says Confirmed Russia's Position on Ukraine Settlement at Meeting With Rubio
KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Sputnik) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that he had confirmed Russia's position on the settlement in Ukraine during the recent meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
"Yes, we discussed Ukraine, we confirmed the position that President [of Russia Vladimir] Putin stated, including once again on July 3 in a conversation with President [of the US Donald] Trump," Lavrov told reporters after the Russia-ASEAN meeting.
When asked about the new approach of Russia to the Ukraine settlement allegedly announced at a meeting with Rubio, the minister refused to comment on the topic.
Additionally, Lavrov said that he had conveyed to Rubio a selection of quotes from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other representatives of the Ukrainian leadership about the need to destroy Russians.
Further, Lavrov rejected accusations against Russia on posing a threat to Europe.
On Thursday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that diplomatic means of resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine had been exhausted, adding that Berlin will continue to support Kiev.
"If Merz thinks that the peaceful possibilities have been used up, exhausted, he must have decided to devote himself completely to the militarization of Germany at the expense of his people, only to parade around again under Nazi slogans to repel the threats posed by Russia. This is utter nonsense," Lavrov told reporters after the Russia-ASEAN meeting.
If Europe is heading towards militarization again, Russia will take this fully into account in all areas of its planning, the minister added.
Answering the question about the fate of the New START (New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) during the meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Lavrov told reporters that "this was not discussed."
