In an exclusive interview at the Russian House event in Kathmandu, marking the 100th anniversary of people's diplomacy and the 69th anniversary of Nepal-Russia diplomatic ties, Nepal's Minister of Education, Science, and Technology, Raghuji Pant, shared his views on the current state of relations.
The minister highlighted Russia’s offer to increase scholarships for Nepali students as a positive initiative. He underscored that Nepal should take full advantage of these opportunities.
Discussing potential areas for deeper collaboration, the minister identified information technology (IT) and biotechnology as the most promising sectors for Nepal-Russia relations. While acknowledging that Nepal is still in the early stages of developing space technology, he pointed to the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) as a key area of focus.
"Biotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI) are currently the most rapidly developing fields. In the area of artificial intelligence, Nepal needs to think about how it is evolving and how Nepal can use this to its advantage," he said.
The historical and cultural ties between Nepal and Russia also played a significant role in the conversation. The minister emphasized that Russian literature, especially the works of writers like Pushkin, Tolstoy, and Chekhov, has had a profound impact on Nepal's intellectual landscape.
Regarding Nepal’s technological progress, the minister noted that while digitalization has become widespread in Nepal, the country still lags behind other nations. He sees this as an area where Nepal can benefit from closer cooperation with Russia.
"Currently, digitalisation is quite widespread in Nepali society, and Nepal has made progress in this area, although we are still significantly behind other countries. I believe this is the area where Nepal can cooperate with Russia," the minister said.
