Indian Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar responded to the White House’s claim that India’s Russian oil purchases are “financing the conflict in Ukraine” during a press conference following high-level talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Thursday.
“For years, the US urged us to stabilise energy markets, even suggesting we buy Russian oil. Now, we’re being criticised for doing just that?”
Russia and India are interested in joint projects for energy production in the Far East and the Arctic shelf, Lavrov further said.

"We have good results in cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector, the supply of Russian oil to the Indian market, and we have a mutual interest in implementing joint projects for the energy production, including in the Russian Federation, in the Far East and on the Arctic shelf," Lavrov said during a joint press conference with his Indian counterpart Jaishankar.

Both the minister also highlighted that Vladivostok-Chennai, North-South, Northern trade routes deepen economic linkages, reduce transit times, and expand trade access across Eurasia and beyond.
Defence and military-technical cooperation between India and Russia continues to remain strong, with Russia expressing support for India’s “Make in India” initiative through joint production efforts and technology transfers, Jaishankar emphasised.
Jaishankar noted that key regional issues, including Ukraine, the Middle East, West Asia, and Afghanistan, were discussed, with India reaffirming its commitment to dialogue and diplomacy for resolving conflicts. The two sides also reiterated their commitment to jointly combat all forms of terrorism. Jaishankar underscored India’s zero-tolerance policy and sovereign right to defend against cross-border threats.
Touching upon the upcoming visit of Russian President Putin to India, Lavrov confirmed that it will take place by the end of the year and that both sides are preparing a "substantial package of documents" for the Russia-India summit.

The ministers also discussed the war in Ukraine. He emphasised that, significant progress has been made at the Russia-US summit in Alaska in terms of defining the parameters of the Ukrainian conflict settlement.

The activities of the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ are aimed at undermining the progress on Ukraine, achieved by Russia and the US during the Alaska summit.

However, Lavrov stressed, Ukraine is clearly showing that it is not interested in a sustainable and long-term resolution of the conflict. Its position indicates that Kiev wants to undermine the settlement efforts being made by Trump, he added.

"Following the Russia-US summit in Alaska, where significant progress was made in moving towards defining the contours and specific parameters of a settlement, when following this event, European countries followed Mr. Zelensky and went to Washington and they tried to promote their agenda there... of course, this cannot cause us any feelings other than complete rejection," Lavrov told a press conference.
Lavrov expressed hope that Europe’s course towards undermining efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine will fail, and that Russia and the US will continue to work together as agreed.
Discussions also highlighted the need to expedite the opening of two new Indian consulates in Kazan and Yekaterinburg. These consulates are expected to enhance regional engagement and further boost trade as well as people-to-people connections between the two countries.
Jaishankar extended an invitation to Lavrov to visit India to further advance the ongoing dialogue between the two countries.
Right before the meeting, both top diplomats thanked each other and expressed confidence that the talks would be "fruitful and productive."
Meanwhile, the ministers coordinate their positions on key international issues, focusing on cooperation within the UN, BRICS, SCO, and G20. Their talks cover regional security in the Asia-Pacific, the situations in Ukraine and Afghanistan, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
