There have been growing concerns over online hatred directed against the Indian community in the US in recent months.
Alexander Duncan, a GOP candidate for US Senate, is facing backlash from Hindu-Americans for verbally targeting a statue of Hindu deity Hanuman, which was unveiled in Texas last year.
"Why are we allowing a false statue of a false Hindu god to be here in Texas? We are a Christian nation!" Duncan posted on X.
"You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.' Exodus 20:3-4," Duncan wrote in another social media post, quoting from the Holy Bible.
Taking offense to his anti-Hindu rants, social media users were quick to remind him that the First Amendment of the US Constitution enshrined the right to freedom of religion.
"Hello @TexasGOP, will you be disciplining your senate candidate from your party who openly contravenes your own guidelines against discrimination—displaying some pretty sordid anti-Hindu hate—not to mention disrespect for the 1st Amendment’s Establishment Clause?" Hindu American Foundation (HAF) reacted to Duncan's posts.
The 90-feet Hanuman statue, officially known as the 'Statue of the Union', is located at the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, Texas. The 90-feet statue is reputed to be third-tallest in the US.
Since its unveiling last year, the Hanuman statue has copped backlash from some church groups and online MAGA supporters, including some prominent handles.
According to US media reports, 15-20 protestors entered the temple premises last August and chanted "demonic" curses against the non-believers, while harassing the Hindu worshippers.
