MOSCOW (Sputnik) - India and Russia will develop new large- and small-capacity nuclear power plant (NPP) projects and cooperate in the nuclear fuel cycle, Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said on Monday.
Mumbai hosted a working meeting between Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev and head of the Indian Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Ajit Kumar Mohanty.
"The discussion covered expanding the partnership, including developing large and small nuclear power plant projects and cooperation in the nuclear fuel cycle. Particular attention was paid to opportunities for localizing equipment manufacturing. Meeting participants noted the valuable experience gained during the Kudankulam NPP project and emphasized their readiness to implement new major nuclear energy initiatives in India," Rosatom said in a statement.
During the meeting, the parties also reviewed in detail the progress of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant the largest NPP in India and a flagship project of India-Russian technological and energy cooperation.
Units 1 and 2 were connected to India’s national power grid in 2013 and 2016, providing electricity to the southern region of the country. Pre-startup operations are currently underway at Unit 3, including preparations for one of the most important milestones: testing the safety systems on an open reactor.
Meanwhile, construction and installation work and equipment deliveries continue for Unit 4, and the third phase, the construction of Units 5 and 6, is also progressing actively.
