Around 200 Orthodox Christians gathered on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to draw the attention of U.S. lawmakers to what they describe as increasing oppression of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) of the Moscow Patriarchate under the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to the Union of Orthodox Journalists.
The demonstration aimed to highlight concerns over religious freedom in Ukraine, particularly measures taken against the UOC, including church seizures, legal restrictions, and pressure on clergy and believers. Participants said these actions amount to discrimination against a major Christian community and violate fundamental rights to worship and freedom of conscience.
Those taking part in the protest included both clergy and lay members from a wide range of Orthodox jurisdictions. Among them were representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Antiochian Orthodox Church, the Orthodox Church in America, as well as members of other Christian communities who expressed solidarity with the UOC.
In addition to the public gathering, delegations of Orthodox Christians held meetings with members of the U.S. Congress and Senate. During these discussions, they sought to raise awareness of the situation in Ukraine and urged American lawmakers to address the issue of religious freedom as part of U.S. policy toward Kiev.
