There's Game of 'Who's Stronger is Right' Today: Russian FM Lavrov
13:38 20.01.2026 (Updated: 17:12 20.01.2026) Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov holds a press conference in Moscow on Tuesday, which will be attended by Russian and foreign journalists.
There is a game of "might is right" in the world today, Lavrov stated.
"The rules that should supposedly underpin a world order that suits the West — these rules have all been crossed out. A game of might is right is being played out. We are all witnessing this. But the consequences of this policy are being felt not only by states in the global South and the global East; crisis trends are also building within Western society itself," Lavrov warned.
He suggested that previously, it was difficult to imagine that discussions around Greenland would lead to the question of preserving NATO unity.
"Crisis trends are building within Western society itself. Greenland is a clear example everyone is talking about, and around which discussions are developing that would have been hard to imagine before, including the prospects for preserving NATO as a unified Western military-political bloc," Lavrov underlined.
He called the US attack on Venezuela "a brutal armed invasion with dozens of dead and injured".
"I have already mentioned how the current year started violently. We have witnessed unprecedented events — the brutal armed invasion of Venezuela by the United States with dozens of dead and wounded, the capture and removal from the country of legitimate President Nicolas Maduro and his wife," Lavrov said during a press conference on the results of Russian diplomacy in 2025.
He further stressed that Russia is deeply concerned about overt attempts to destabilize the situation in Iran.
"And, of course, the overt, declared attempts by external forces to destabilize Iran's domestic political situation are deeply concerning," Lavrov said at a press conference summarizing Russia's diplomatic activities in 2025.
Russia is keen to help in reducing tensions around Venezuela and Iran.
"We are interested in helping to reduce tensions in all the areas that have now escalated and which I have listed, be it Venezuela and especially the Iranian situation," Lavorv said.
Russia will defend its interests consistently, not claiming anyone's legitimate rights, but also not allowing our legitimate rights to be freely treated, he underscored.
Russia will hold dialogue with international partners based on mutual respect and equality principles and is ready to work with anyone who is willing to cooperate without blackmail and on the basis of reciprocity, the minister said, adding that all attempts to isolate Russia have failed.
He stressed that Russia is committed to finding a diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian crisis.
"We are committed, as President [of Russia Vladimir] Putin has repeatedly stressed, to finding a diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian crisis," Russia' Foreign minister said.
The EU is trying to undermine the US's efforts on the Ukraine conflict peace settlement and trying to convince US President Donald Trump to change his position on Ukraine, the minister said, adding that they are seriously preparing for a war with Russia.
There has never been lack of goodwill on the part of Russia to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, but West has tried to undermine all agreements, Lavrov added.
He noted that, the United States is the only Western country willing to address the root causes of the Ukraine conflict — an approach Moscow supports.
Lavrov stated that Russia has received the charter of the “Peace Council” on Gaza and noted that the Trump administration is pragmatic, recognizing the need not just to unite countries under its leadership, but also to take their interests into account.
At the same time, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is in a "catastrophic" state and has has hit rock bottom, he slammed the organization, and added that it is unclear whether it can be "resuscitated."
"I do not know how possible resuscitation is in this case. The OSCE has fallen as low as it can possibly go. An organization founded on the principles of equality and consensus has completely degenerated into an instrument that the West, using its majority, sharpens against Russia on a daily basis,"
He added that the Euro-Atlantic security discredited itself, therefore, Eurasian security is next.
He announced that Russia steps up efforts to resume Russia–India–China (RIC) format meetings.
"And this was simultaneously with the initiative to begin the process of cooperation in the Russia, India, China (RIC) triangle, which still exists, although it has not been convened for a long time, but no one has canceled it, and we are working to resume its activities," Lavrov asserted.
Russia's partnership with India remains privileged, strengthened by President Putin's New Delhi visit last year, he affirmed.
He asserted that Russia will continue efforts to build a greater Eurasian partnership.
“We will keep promoting President Putin’s key initiatives, especially forming a greater Eurasian partnership and, on that basis, a pan-continental architecture of equal, indivisible security,” Lavrov said.
He added that a continent-wide dialogue must be established on the principle of equality, without chasing rigid models or bureaucratic structures, so countries can benefit geopolitically and economically from their location.
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia is holding an annual press conference on the results of Russian diplomacy in 2024. Lavrov is due to meet media representatives from Russia and beyond to answer their questions on a whole array of pressing international issues, including those related to Ukraine and the Middle East.
