Cooperation within the BRICS framework contributes to fair global governance and sustainable development, said a joint statement following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Malaysia.

"Malaysia welcomed India’s 2026 BRICS Chairmanship, while India reaffirmed its commitment in supporting Malaysia’s role as a BRICS Partner Country and noted the aspiration of Malaysia to become a member of BRICS. Both Leaders recognised this cooperation as a strategic milestone toward enhancing a more balanced and representative international order.," the statement reads.

The Prime Ministers of India and Malaysia also agreed that "such engagements provide vital platforms for economies to contribute constructively to equitable global governance and sustainable development."
India is chairing BRICS this year and is set to host the summit of the organisation’s member states. New Delhi has already outlined its priorities, opting, as it did during its G20 presidency in 2023, to actively champion the interests of the Global South. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid out a people-centric and development-focused agenda for BRICS in 2026. Modi proposed an approach based on the principle of "humanity first," with four key pillars: sustainability, innovation, cooperation, and eco-friendliness.
