Russia on UN Resolution on Ukraine: Parties' Intentions More Important Than Formality
Russia is more concerned with the seriousness of the Ukrainian side's intentions to implement the agreements that will be reached between Moscow and Kiev than with how they will be legally formalized, Kirill Logvinov, the director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's international organizations department, told Sputnik.
The diplomat noted that while there were numerous cases in history where agreements were enshrined in a corresponding UN Security Council resolution, there were also precedents of the West evading the implementation of binding documents adopted by the Council. Logvinov cited the Minsk agreements and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran's nuclear program (JCPOA), from which the United States withdrew in defiance of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which enshrined the JCPOA, as examples of deviations from agreed-upon commitments.
"Therefore, for us, the more important thing is not the legal formalization of possible agreements, but the seriousness of the participants in the negotiating process to comply with all their provisions," Logvinov said.
UN resolutions are adopted to give certain agreements additional international legitimacy, he added.
