BANGKOK (Sputnik) - Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing has signed a decree granting amnesty to 4,335 prisoners, state-run broadcaster MRTV reported on Friday.
The president issued the decree to mark the Thingyan (Water Festival) and Myanmar's traditional New Year, according to the report.
Myanmar observed Thingyan, its traditional New Year's water festival, from April 11-14 — the final days of the year under the traditional Myanmar calendar, which traces back to an ancient Indian chronological system.
April 17 marks the first day of the new year, 1388, in that calendar.
